A jaded sellsword looking to break free of the endless drudgery of mercenary work, Alantin can come across as awkward, standoffish, or even shy, at first. Life as a mercenary might have made him quite adept at fighting but it's not the best teacher when it comes to social skills. Still, a friendly hello can go a long way.

Background

Alantin was born shortly before the Garlean invasion of the East. He was fortunate enough to be spared from the worst of the early fighting but has no memory of his homeland as he far too young to remember anything of the land of his birth when his parents spirited him away along with the first wave of refugees from the East. The exodus was not without its own tribulations and Alantin was orphaned in a Sahagin attack shortly after arriving in Lominsan waters. He was taken in by the Silver Wings, the small mercenary company that responded to the attack. The Silver Wings were a principled mercenary company that prided itself on putting doing good before making profit. While honorable, the company had issues with insolvency and scarcely had the revenue to support its continued operations, much less raise a child. It worked out, somehow, and Alantin was raised in the mercenary lifestyle, developing into a capable warrior at a young age.Though Alantin inherited the Silver Wings' principles of righteous and upstanding mercenary work, this idealistic view of the world crumbled when a long-term covert operations contract deep into enemy territory went wrong, leading to the deaths of most of the members. Alantin was one of the few to survive, and only because the captain had refused to bring him along in the first place. When Alantin learned the failure was the result of an unauthorized rescue operation outside of mission parameters, the doubts he'd already been harboring about the Silver Wings' approach were solidified. In a fit of anger over his perceived abandonment, he disavowed the philosophy of the Silver Wings and turned his back on the remnant, choosing instead to strike out on his own as a freelancer. To avoid the pain of losing family all over again, Alantin keeps a safe professional distance with all his mercenary acquaintances. Although he eventually came to recognize it wasn't ideology that led to the deaths of the Silver Hand, by the time he does, he's also grown enough to realize that the blind idealism hadn't done them any favors, either. As time passed, Alantin became increasingly disillusioned with the mercenary lifestyle. Though proud of doing good work, Alantin was deliberately bereft of friends and personal connections in mercenary circles and was thus something of an outcast. Mercenary work became more about survival than passion and, eventually, Alantin began to consider a change of careers.

Personality

Alantin can come across as rather cold and abrasive on most occasions, if not outright hostile. This owes to the scowl he wears near-perpetually. He exudes the aura of a lone wolf and most people give him a wide berth as a result. When he interacts with clients—whether they accompany him on assignments or simply dispatch him to complete them—he tries to stay cordial and accommodating. At the same time, he maintains a certain professional distance; he isn't looking to make friends through mercenary work. When a client is familiar or particularly friendly, he can be warmer with them, but he still keeps a wary distance. This is not indicative of his true personality. His hostility can be attributed to one simple fact about him: mercenary work makes him grumpy, especially the sorts of mind-numbing and menial tasks he spends most of his days doing. He would very much like to escape the endless drudgery of mercenary work but due to certain personal circumstances, he has no choice but to continue being a mercenary to make ends meet.On the occasional day he doesn't have to do any mercenary work, Alantin can still come across as somewhat stand-offish to people he doesn't know. As someone who has spent most of his adult life alone, he doesn't quite understand how to interact with unfamiliar people. In more laid-back circumstances, such as at events, or at bars and clubs, some of Alantin's innate flirtatiousness can come through, especially when talking to friendly strangers. The moment anyone flirts back, however, his awkwardness returns full force and he gets flustered.Once he is comfortable with a person, however, his true personality shines through. He is warm, straightforward—almost to the point of being brusque—sardonic, earnest, and quite flirtatious when he wants to be. He can be quite shy, especially when someone expresses an interest in him for the first time, but once he warms up to a person, and he is aroused enough to blunt his nervousness, his inner eager submissive has no trouble expressing itself. To a tight circle of close friends, he is something of a self-professed slut, only too happy to take what they are willing to give him, and all too eager for more.Because Alantin has such difficulty making friends, he treasures the precious few he has. Woe betide the foolish man that hurts them as he will not hesitate to bring the full force of everything he's learned as a mercenary to bear. His retribution is swift and merciless, even if it might not be clean, sometimes.

Personality Summary

  • Can come across as rather cold and abrasive to unfamiliar people during work days due to him finding most work days rather unpleasant.

  • Is cordial and professional but distant to most clients. He is warmer and less formal with familiar clients and genuinely friendly ones.

  • If his assignment is an exciting one, the façade cracks a bit and he becomes a bit more genial with the client. This is because much of the work he does is mindless and/or menial for the most part.

  • Can come across as shy or stand-offish because he just doesn't quite understand how to interact with strangers outside of the context of work.

  • Struggles with small talk and flirts to compensate for any awkwardness in an interaction but quickly gets flustered when someone flirts back.

  • Doesn't loosen up until he becomes familiar with a person or otherwise warms up to them.

  • Warm, frank, sardonic, earnest, and genuinely flirtatious with friends.

  • Has no patience for games and much prefers straightforward people and situations.

  • Gets nervous the first time someone expresses interest in him but quickly warms up, especially when the other person has a dominant personality because he is an eager submissive at heart.

  • Has made most of his closest friends through intimacy and is something of a self-professed slut among his inner circle of friends.

  • Treasures what few friends he has and is fiercely loyal and protective toward them; if anyone dare harm a hair on his friends' heads, he will eviscerate them.

  • Has a darker side that appears when he is engaged in a difficult fight and is forced into a corner. In those moments, he displays a savagery and bloodthirst that can only be quelled when someone subdues him after the battle.
